A cookbook club with a delicious mission.
Following the 2024 election, something changed in our world. Or maybe it just changed in me. Never before did I feel a deeper sense of purpose to help organizations that need it most, to nurture my community, and to focus on things that spark joy.
For me, I’ve always found comfort in sharing a meal with others and for the past several years I’ve run a very fun and spirited cookbook club with friends. I’d been trying to figure out a way to broaden the scope of that club and realized maybe it was time for a second one with a deeper mission at its core - social action.
And so Cooking for Causes was born in the early weeks of November 2024. I quickly discovered that there were many likeminded community members who shared my concerns, hopes, values and, of course, love of a good meal.
Every Cooking for Causes event requires a ticket for entry and the proceeds of those tickets directly support a nonprofit working in support of an important social cause (e.g., women’s rights, protecting the environment, preserving democracy, LGBTQ+ rights, etc.)
How it works
Interested in coming to an event? Here’s how it works.
(1) Buy a ticket to an upcoming event.
Each Cooking for Causes event requires a ticket for entry, of which 100% of proceeds goes directly to support a selected nonprofit advocating for an important cause. There are no refunds on tickets.
(2) Sign up for a recipe.
Every event will feature a cookbook sign-up sheet. Each participant should prepare at least one recipe from the chosen cookbook. (Think of it like a potluck but with more organization.) Cookbook clubs are a great way to explore a single book’s many recipes. If you’re truly pressed for time and still want to come, you can sign up to bring a drink to share instead.
(3) Come ready to dine + do good.
Whenever possible, each event will feature a small moment of action in support of the cause (e.g., postcard writing, care packages, etc.)
FAQs
How much is a ticket?
Ticket prices will vary by event but the idea is for the price to be low enough that it’s not a huge barrier of entry and yet still enough that our collective donations help make an impact.
What if I don’t like to cook?
This might not be the right club for you! Ha! While cooking a recipe is encouraged, you could absolutely sign up to bring a drink to share instead.
What do I do if I can’t come?
There are unfortunately no refunds on tickets. Feel free to find a friend to take your place and/or let the organizer know if you can’t join as events may have a waitlist of interested participants.
How are causes chosen?
Causes are focused around key social issues and needs that feel most critical.
What do I wear to events?
Whatever you like! There is no dress code.
Is my ticket price / donation tax-deductible?
Each ticketed event may run a little differently so it’s recommended to double-check with your tax professional if the ticket is tax-deductible.
What do I need to bring with my dish to events?
At the event, you should bring your dish ready to serve. Room temperature is fine. There is no access to reheat. Please bring utensils to serve and label your serving pieces with your name. The meal will be served buffet style for all to enjoy. Plates, utensils & supplies will be provided.
